How to choose between zinc alloy and aluminum alloy

The key lies in weighing the priorities. There is no absolutely better material; only materials that are more suitable for specific applications.

When prioritizing high strength, high hardness and structural integrity

Choose zinc alloys: At room temperature, most zinc alloys (especially the ZA series) have superior strength, hardness and creep resistance compared to aluminum alloys. They can produce thinner and stronger components, suitable for structural parts that need to withstand large loads and impacts, such as high-performance tool casings, car seat belts, gears, etc.

 

Choose aluminum alloy: Although it has a higher specific strength (strength/density), its absolute strength is usually not as good as that of zinc alloy. It is more suitable for structural components where weight is a concern but the load is not extreme.

When prioritizing lightweighting

Choose aluminum: This is one of the most decisive factors. The density of aluminum (approximately 2.7 g/cm³) is much lower than that of zinc alloy (approximately 6.7 g/cm³). For parts of the same volume, aluminum is about 60% lighter than zinc alloy. This is crucial for automobiles, aerospace, portable electronic products (such as laptop computer shells, phone body frames) and sports equipment.

 

Carefully select zinc alloy: If product weight is a key factor, zinc alloy is usually not a good choice.

When giving priority to excellent surface treatment and aesthetics

Choose zinc alloy: Zinc alloy is the "favorite" in the surface treatment industry. Its surface is easy to undergo electroplating (chromium plating, gold plating, nickel plating, etc.), has extremely strong adhesion, and can achieve an extremely bright, wear-resistant, and high-end decorative appearance. It is very suitable for faucets, door handles, bathroom accessories, fashionable accessories, etc.

 

Choose aluminum alloy: Aluminum alloy is usually treated with anodizing, which can produce various colors (silver, black, gold, champagne color, etc.), forming a hard and wear-resistant oxide layer. However, it is difficult to achieve the mirror-like electroplating effect of zinc alloy. The appearance is more inclined towards a sense of technology and modernity.

When prioritizing cost-effectiveness and mass production:

Material cost: The price of aluminum alloy is usually higher than that of zinc alloy. However, due to its lower density, the material cost difference for individual parts will be reduced.

 

Production cost: Zinc alloy die-casting offers significant advantages. It has a low melting point, causing less thermal shock to the molds, and the mold lifespan is longer (zinc alloy molds can last up to a million cycles, while aluminum alloy molds typically last around several hundred thousand cycles). Additionally, zinc alloy has excellent fluidity, resulting in shorter die-casting cycles, higher production efficiency, and lower defect rates. For ultra-large-scale production, the overall production cost of zinc alloy is usually lower.

 

Post-processing cost: The surface finish of zinc alloy castings is very smooth, and they usually can be electroplated without the need for extensive machining. Aluminum alloy castings may require more mechanical processing.  

When the product is exposed to high-temperature environments

Choose aluminum alloy: The heat resistance of aluminum alloy is much better than that of zinc alloy. Zinc alloy's mechanical properties will sharply decline when the temperature exceeds 95°C, and it may even undergo creep and dimensional changes after long-term operation. Aluminum alloy can withstand much higher temperatures (above 200°C) and is suitable for engine components, radiators, etc.

 

Absolutely avoid using zinc alloy: Any component that is close to a heat source or works in a high-temperature environment must not use zinc alloy.

When considering environmental corrosion resistance

Choose aluminum alloy: The surface of aluminum alloy will naturally form a dense protective layer of aluminum oxide, giving it excellent corrosion resistance in the natural environment. It is particularly suitable for outdoor applications.

 

Select zinc alloy: Zinc alloy itself is prone to "white rust" in humid environments and requires a surface coating to provide protection. Once the coating is damaged, the base material is likely to corrode. However, when the coating is intact, its corrosion resistance is also very excellent.

It feels heavier in your hand than plastic items of the same size, but lighter than stainless steel or copper items.

Q: Why is zinc alloy so suitable for die-casting process?
